How many times a day should I walk my dog? If you’re asking how many times a day should i walk my dog, the answer depends on age, energy level and breed. At Reapmoor Dogs in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, we’ve found that Cockapoos, Poodles and Spaniels alike love to go walkies.
As a minimum we recommend at least twice a day to allow our furry friends to exercise, socialise and do what they need to do. If you don’t have anywhere nearby and you have a car, getting them used to travel is a great idea too.
Practical walking guidelines
- Two daily walks form a solid routine: Most dogs benefit from a morning and an evening walk to meet their exercise and toilet needs.
- Adjust to age and energy: Puppies need shorter, more frequent sessions (about 5–15 minutes per walk, 2–4 times per day); adults usually cope well with 20–30 minute walks; seniors may prefer shorter, slower strolls.
- Include mental stimulation: Allow sniffing opportunities, basic training during the walk, and gentle play along the route.
- Weather safety: Avoid the hottest part of the day in summer, provide fresh water, and check paws for heat or ice in winter.
- Leash, gear and safety: Use a comfortable harness or collar, ensure ID tags are up to date, and stay aware of traffic and other dogs.
- Travel and variety: If you lack nearby spaces, consider car trips to new walking routes to keep things interesting and expose them to new sights.
- Consistency with flexibility: Establish a routine but be flexible for days with different schedules, and adjust the length of walks to your dog’s needs.
